Mobility Matters Special - The Christmas Quiz Answers
Good day my good friend.
So, how well do you think you did at the quiz? Well, you are about to find out. Without further ado, here are your answers.
The busiest metro system in the world is, of course, Shanghai. Just beating out Tokyo. One that I was surprised at myself, but the effects of Covid-19 on passenger numbers may have been more severe in some places than others, as you will find out in the answer to question 10. 16% of you were right.
The size of the fleet of trains that serves the Elizabeth Line is 76, correctly guessed by 20% of you. If you thought it was 70 (39% of you did), maybe you forgot about the 6 Class 315s that serve the line, which are due to be withdrawn from service at the end of this month.
The picture round. Its Risk of Grounding, correctly answered by 52% of you. A term that sounds almost as bad as twerking, if I’m honest. Or its the name of an indie band from Sheffield.
Taylor Swift’s private jet emitted the most CO2, with 53% of you being right. She did say that she didn’t take all those flights, as her plane is hired out. Which isn’t much better, really.
Imperial College’s research found that Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) reduced pollution levels on boundary roads by 9%, with 31% of you being right. Unless you hate LTNs, then they increased air pollution levels by 40265943329677285% within 3 seconds of opening. But that wasn’t an answer.
Big Yellow Taxi was originally sung by Joni Mitchell, and 71% of you answered correctly. Amy Grant’s cover wasn’t bad. Vanessa Carlton and Counting Crows teamed up to cover the song, and shouldn’t have because it can only be described as a crime against music. Listen at your own risk.
Ukrainian Railways evacuated 2 million people to safety in 15 days at the start of the Russian invasion, so well done to 31% of you for getting that right. All while being, you know, invaded. Україно, ти зробив добро!
Local authorities got £200 million in Active Travel Fund Tranche 2, with 33% of you guessing correctly. And they have been given a lot more before and since.
Leslie Hore-Belisha not only had a card game named after him, but also the lights on zebra crossings. And he also introduced the 30mph speed limit. Good man. This question really sorted you all out, with just 6% of you answering correctly.
2021 was still a bad year for the railways, with many still recovering from the effects of Covid. So much so that just 3 countries in Europe had passenger levels above what they were in 2010, as answered by 33% of you. They were Turkey, Estonia, and the Czech Republic/Czechia.
If you disagree with any of these answers, please email me. And I will ignore it as I am putting my feet up until 3rd January. Have a very, Merry Christmas, and thank you once again for all of your support this year. It means a lot!
